Amazon Announces the $50 Fire Tablet September 23 2015

Apple only recently announced its new iPad tablets, but the tablet market is about to be disrupted thanks to the company's rival Amazon.  The Kindle remains a popular option among Amazon shoppers, especially those who subscribe to its Prime service.  With the company's massive collection of books, video, music, and an app store, the Kindle Fire remains a top competitor and with the announcement of the new Fire, Amazon may have a winner on its hands this holiday season.

The Amazon Fire tablet (the Kindle name has been dropped) doesn't come with specs that are all that impressive on paper, but Amazon managed to price it for the unbelievably low price of $50.  With eight gigabytes of storage on board, the amount seems rather paltry, but the Fire tablet can support MicroSD cards with up to 128 gigabytes of storage, dramatically boosting the amount of space available.  The tablet is geared towards customers who will be using their device largely for reading purposes, although it does have full access to Amazon's apps and video library.

The $50 Fire tablet arguably competes directly with Apple's pricier iPad Mini, which starts at a much more expensive $269, but does have better specs.  If you plan on using the Fire tablet lightly to read or would like an inexpensive tablet for your child, the Fire tablet could be an option that's also much lighter on your pocketbook.

All about the New iPad Pro September 16 2015

Yesterday we took a closer look at the new iPhone 6S and the reasons why you might want to upgrade to one of these newer, faster models.  Today we'll be shifting the focus over to the all new iPad Pro, Apple's new, much larger tablet designed to compete with Microsoft's popular Surface Pro line of tablets.

The first thing you'll notice about the iPad Pro is its size: 12.9 inches.  Despite the large size and the increased screen real estate, those who have had a chance to handle the device have commented on how remarkably light it is despite appearances, it only weighs 1.57 pounds.  As with the new iPhones, the iPad Pro also features faster internals than its smaller siblings and for the first time, the company is including 4GB of RAM which should provide enough performance for most people who like to multitask efficiently.

Similar to Microsoft's Surface, the iPad Pro has its own “Smart Keyboard” that functions as a cover and easily connects to the iPad, although this cover will not be available until November.  There is also a stylus, called the Apple Pencil which is designed to provide little to no lag when you're drawing or writing on the tablet.  Interestingly, the iPad Pro will be able to detect whether you're using your finger or the Apple Pencil to interact with the device.

Reasons to Buy the iPhone 6S September 16 2015

As we reported last week, Apple announced several new iOS devices including the iPhone 6S, 6S Plus and, most distinctively, the iPad Pro.  By now you're probably familiar with these devices and their new features.  In the case of the iPhones however, the changes are relatively modest as opposed to a reinvention, improving largely upon the 6 and 6 Plus internals.  This begs the question: is the new iPhone 6S worth your hard earned money?  Here are a few reasons why you may wish to upgrade.

The primary feature being touted in the iPhone 6S is 3D Touch.  This new technology can measure how much pressure is applied to your screen, allowing a greater range of interactivity and reducing the amount it takes to perform certain actions.  For example, a deep press on an app can bring up contextual options or be used to snap a quick selfie.

The iPhone 6S camera has also received improvements, boasting a new sensor chip that's designed to deliver more accurate colors and reduce noise in images.  If you've ever attempted to snap a photo in low light, you know that noise is a major issue, this new camera sensor makes progress in addressing this issue.

Each of the iPhone 'S' models have focused on boosting speed and overall phone performance, the iPhone 6S is no exception.  The new processor is over sixty percent faster and, per Apple, graphics have seen a ninety percent boost, which should come as welcome news to those of you who like to play graphically intensive iOS games.

Apple to Announce New iPhones and iPad September 09 2015

Today is an exciting day for iOS users and tech enthusiasts.  Apple is holding its annual fall event this afternoon at San Francisco's Bill Graham Civic Auditorium to announce a slew of new products, including new iPhones as well as a new iPad device and potentially a new Apple TV.  Rumors suggest the new iPhones are expected to build upon the existing iPhone 6 and its larger sibling the iPhone 6 Plus.

In keeping with its previous naming conventions, the new Apple devices are expected to be called the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus.  Going by past events, these devices are usually refinements and improvements on the existing Apple products instead of the more substantial changes that come with the change in number (i.e.: iPhone 5 to iPhone 6) where the company makes larger changes to the inside and overall appearance.  The new iPhones are expected to have faster processors and additional memory as well as improvements to the already well-regarded camera.

For iPad users, Apple is expected to announce the iPad Pro, a larger 12-inch tablet with an included stylus aimed at enterprise users.  This iPad will have 32 gigabytes of storage and may be priced similarly to what its lower cost laptops typically go for.

At the Felix Company, we currently sell a range of accessories for Apple's existing iOS devices, including iPad covers and stands for the iPad and iPad Mini and various iPhone cases. You can rest assured that we'll be following the event and will provide accessories for Apple's new range of devices once they've been announced and released.

All About the Camera Phone September 02 2015

Up until 2000, cameras were separate devices from a cell phone.  While there were digital cameras, the first one was sold in Japan in December 1989; the camera phone was not introduced until 2000, called the J-Phone model.  Interestingly this momentous event also happened in Japan.  A camera phone is a mobile phone that is also able to take photos and videos (although not all devices are able to record video).

In the beginning, most camera phones were more simplistic then digital cameras.  Previously, camera phones contained fixed-focus lenses and smaller sensors, which limited their ability to perform well in poor lighting.  Moreover, since the equipment did not contain physical shutters, some of them experienced shutter lag, and the flash, while available, usually underperformed.  However, since then, camera phones have significantly upgraded their features in even the most basic of gadgets.  Additionally, they lack most of the technological disadvantages their predecessor previously experienced and in addition to cost and convenience, having a camera phone allows individuals to possess the best of both worlds.  Users are able to conserve space as well as enjoy certain bonuses like geotagging, Bluetooth capabilities, and image stitching.  Also, a few of the higher end phones can use the touch screen to direct the camera to focus on a specific object.

Why Insurance for Mobile Devices is a Smart Idea September 01 2015

Cell phones are prone to damage, with users constantly dropping the device on the concrete or worse, water.  After everything consumers put their phone through, cell phone insurance seems like a given, but there are still some individuals that feel insurance for a phone is unnecessary.  However, there are actually a few good reasons why buying protection for a cellular phone is a great investment.  Not only is the price for the insurance way less than the price to actually replace the phone, but most companies offer a low deductible that is affordable and convenient.  Below are a few insurance companies that would be great options for consumers.

SquareTrade – This company has multiple protection plans for smartphones, tablets, laptops, cameras, TVs and other various electronic devices.  Stating at $7.99 a month for iPhones and $6.99 a month for other smartphones, the plans protect the device against drops, spills, mechanical failures, display failures, broken ports, and other glitches.

Protect Your Bubble – Plans start at $7.99, Protect Your Bubble, covers cell phones from accidental damage caused by daily use, for instance mechanical issues and fluid mishaps.

Asurion – One of the more well known brands, the insurance company concentrates on replacement, and offers overnight replacement after a claim has been filed.  Available via multiple mobile providers, in addition to major wireless carriers (like T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, and AT&T), the plan protects mobile devices from the mechanical, liquid, and physical damage that can plague many smartphone carriers.  In addition, consumers can include accessories with their coverage, including earbuds and car chargers.

With tablets fastly becoming a popular item amongst individuals from all lifestyles, the influx of applications available has reached staggering amounts.  The Google Play store, the place where Android users go to download apps, has recently exploded with applications, beginning to rival fierce competitor Apple.  With the huge selection that is now available to users, there can be a little bit of a disconnect regarding which applications to download.  Below is a list of a few great applications for an Android tablet.

Laptop Must Haves for School August 26 2015

It is the beginning of the school year and that means that kids must be prepared with all essential items to ensure that they have a successful time.  With so many schools, switching to a more technology-based curriculum it is becoming more and more important to make sure that children have the best devices available.  Felix, a company dedicated to designing technology-based accessories for a variety of devices, presents a few tips on what to look for when deciding to buy a laptop.

Tip #1: A high processor is a very important thing to remember to look for.  The lower the gigabytes on a processor the slower a computer will work, so it is best to get a computer with more power.  Intel and AMD’s latest processor chips will improve system performance, graphic processing and battery life significantly.

Tip #2: Screen resolution is another essential feature for a laptop.  When faced with what kind of laptop to purchase for the school year, it is best to go with a portable, durable screen size and resolution.  Commonly a maximum resolution of 1366x768 pixels is a great selection in addition to a more compact screen , thus ensuring that the device is a great selection for school-aged children.

Tip #3: One of the more obvious but still prominent choices to consider is battery life.  Most students will need to be able to use their laptop regardless of proximity to a wall plug, so it is imperative to choose a laptop that can last for at least 6 hours on a single charge.

Flashback Friday: A Look At Cell Phones From the Past August 21 2015

Nowadays, there are really only two contenders for best phone, that’s Apple, and Android based phones, but back in the day, there was a lot more competition.  Between the RAZR, Sidekick and BlackBerry Curve, consumers had a wide variety of options to choose from.  Below are a few old school cell phones that the staff at Felix kind of miss.

T-Mobile Sidekick - A wonderful combination of cool and useful, this phone was a must have for all people that wanted a QWERY keyboard.  Additionally, the rotation of the screen and trackball were awesome features that every teen and young adult went crazy for.

Motorola RAZR – This skinny, compact flip phone was considered the must have item when it was released.  The thin design of the phone and colored screen had every consumer rushing to buy one, and the unique colors the cases came in were incredibly trendy back then.

LG enV – Buyers who had this phone were the envy of everyone around them.  A smart phone that also received email, the LG enV was incredible for all of the young professionals just starting out.  Moreover, it also came in cool trendy colors that made the user feel “different and unique.”

Blackberry Curve – This classic used to give Apple a run for its money.  With a QWERTY keyboard, access to all email agents and instant messaging applications, this phone was one of the most popular devices to come out of the 2000s.
